12 Profitable Hobbies That Make Money

12 Profitable Hobbies That Make Money

Jenny Ho
February 11, 2025

Last week, my friend Sarah texted me: "How are you making money from just posting tech review videos on YouTube?" She couldn't believe my casual YouTube hobby had turned into a $3,000/month side income.

The truth? Most people don't realize how easy it is to monetize their hobbies. They think you need special skills, thousands of followers, or years of experience.

I used to think the same. Until I discovered that everyday people were already doing it:

  • Gamers earning thousands streaming on Twitch
  • Craft lovers making passive income selling patterns on Etsy
  • Amateur photographers licensing their phone pictures to brands
  • Regular people reviewing products for $200+ per video

Here's what I've learned after helping dozens turn their hobbies into income streams: You don't need to be extraordinary. You just need to pick the right hobby and know how to monetize it.

Some hobbies are naturally more profitable than others. And certain monetization strategies work better for specific hobbies.

In this guide, I'll show you:

  • The 12 most profitable hobbies you can start today
  • How to choose the right hobby that makes money
  • Which monetization method works best for each hobby

No empty promises. No "follow your passion" clichés. Just practical steps to turn your hobby into income.

Hobbies That Can Become Money-Making Side Hustles

Hobbies have always been a way to relax and enjoy your free time, but many are now turning those same hobbies into side incomes.

According to CNBC, almost 36% of Americans have a side hustle, and many of those start with a hobby.

With tools, platforms, and marketplaces available today, it's easier than ever to earn extra income from something you enjoy doing. Let's take a closer look at 12 of them.

Running an Affiliate Marketing YouTube Channel

If you enjoy creating videos and sharing your insights or expertise, running an affiliate marketing YouTube channel can be a highly profitable hobby.

It’s a great option for anyone who likes to teach, entertain, or share reviews along with earning passive income in the process.

Affiliate marketing involves promoting others’ products or services through unique affiliate links. When someone purchases a product using your link, you earn a commission from the sale.

Though you're just starting out, affiliate marketing can be lucrative with a smaller, dedicated audience.

Unlike ad revenue, which depends on high view counts, affiliate marketing can bring in income even with fewer views, as long as there is strong trust with your audience.

So building trust is important. For this, you need to create content that helps your audience and guides them in making purchasing decisions.

Review videos, which make up 45% of affiliate marketing content, tend to perform the best, with tutorials not far behind at 30%.

For example, the Unbox Therapy YouTube channel is known for its honest reviews of gadgets and consumer electronics.

Unbox Therapy's YouTube videos.

They provide thorough analysis and generate significant revenue from commissions earned through the reviewed product affiliate links.

Likewise, Michelle Phan, a beauty YouTuber, built her brand with tutorials and product reviews, often linking the products used in her videos to affiliate links

Michelle Phan's YouTube videos.

But there are not just reviews and tutorials you can use. There are many other content formats that can generate affiliate sales, including:

  • Product comparisons
  • Case studies
  • Best-of lists (e.g., "Top 5 Budget Laptops")
  • Shopping haul
  • Deal and discount alerts
  • Setup and installation guides

So to start a YouTube affiliate marketing channel…

  • Select a niche that you’re passionate about and knowledgeable in.
  • Sign up for affiliate programs such as Amazon Associates, ShareASale, or specific brand partnerships.
  • Create videos sharing honest reviews, tutorials, or demonstrations of affiliate products.

To go deeper into the details of each step, I have created a complete step-by-step guide on YouTube affiliate marketing that you can check out!

Blogging

Blogging has been a popular way for people to make money by sharing their interests and expertise. With so many businesses emphasizing online visibility, blogs are a great way to establish credibility and reach an audience.

According to recent reports, 77% of internet users read blogs regularly which shows how widespread the appeal of blogs is.

Bloggers can monetize their sites in multiple ways, and the statistics show just how lucrative this can be.

The average income for a full-time blogger can be around $45,000 per year, though this can vary greatly depending on the niche, audience size, and methods of monetization.

One common way to earn money is through affiliate marketing, where you promote products or services and earn a commission on sales through your blog.

For instance, Michelle Schroeder-Gardner of the blog Making Sense of Cents earns a big portion of her income through affiliate marketing.

Making Sense of Cents webpage.

She is promoting financial tools and products like credit cards, insurance, and online courses. And reportedly made over $50,000 a month through affiliate marketing alone.

You can also monetize your blog through ads, such as using Google AdSense, which displays ads on your blog and pays based on clicks or impressions.

With over 50 million+ monthly visits, Business Insider, a financial news platform generates substantial revenue per month through strategically placed ads, often above the fold for maximum visibility.

In addition to that, many bloggers sell digital products such as eBooks, online courses, or printables related to their niche that you could too.

Pat Flynn of Smart Passive Income has monetized his blog by selling passes to become a part of his community, eBooks, and courses such as Build Your Own Brand.

To grow your blog traffic, you must follow SEO best practices that include using the right keywords, writing well-structured posts, and getting backlinks from other websites.

Since getting into the depth of these practices is beyond the scope of this article, check out this video to learn more.

Plus, create Instagram posts or YouTube Shorts that link back to full posts. The Planet D, one of the most visited blogs, does this well.

Pro Tip

  • Post regularly to keep your audience engaged and to help improve your search engine ranking over time.
  • Write evergreen content that remains relevant over time as it continues to bring in traffic and generate income long after they are published.

Photography

If you have an eye for detail and enjoy capturing moments, photography is a hobby that can generate income.

In fact, many on an average photographers in the US are making more than $17.25 per hour/$49,230 per year.

Sell your photos on Shutterstock, Adobe Stock, or Unsplash and earn royalties every time someone downloads an image. Shoot high-quality commercial images that brands and businesses need for marketing.

Event photography is a profitable niche—weddings, corporate events, and concerts require skilled photographers.

Jose Villa, a wedding photographer, built a seven-figure business by photographing high-end weddings and charging over $50,000 per event.

A collage of elegant wedding images.

Product photography is also in high demand, as businesses need high-quality images for e-commerce. Set up a home studio with a basic DSLR or mirrorless camera, lighting kit, and backdrop.

Etsy is filled with small business owners looking for professional photos to showcase their products.

Etsy search results for photography services.

If you prefer passive income, sell digital presets and filters on Lightroom or Etsy. Many photographers earn thousands by creating and marketing their custom presets to influencers and content creators.

Also, social media is a strong tool for growth. Create faceless YouTube channels or short Instagram videos showing editing tips, or final results to attract clients.

Peter McKinnon gained millions of followers by posting photography tutorials and behind-the-scenes videos on YouTube and Instagram which led to paid sponsorships and brand deals.

However, to sell your photography services and make money from it, you might need some expensive equipment like a full-frame camera, high-quality lenses, and professional lighting.

If you're on a budget, you can start with a crop-sensor camera, affordable prime lenses, and natural light setups to achieve professional results.

Writing (Freelance & Creative)

If writing is your hobby, there are many ways to make money from it. One of the easiest ways is to sell your writing services on platforms such as Upwork, Fiverr, or Freelancer.

About 82% of businesses need content writers for their content marketing material including blog posts, product descriptions, and social media content.

You can get paid per project, per word, or hour, depending on the type of work. Elna Cain, a freelance writer, started without experience and now earns thousands per month writing for SaaS companies.

Elna Cain's webpage.

Many writers also build their email lists or blogs and sell affiliate products. Every sale made through these channels earns a commission by recommending useful books, courses, or software.

Secondly, if you enjoy creative writing, publishing e-books on Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing is a proven way to make money.

Mark Dawson, a self-published author, earns over six figures selling thrillers on Amazon.

Amazon's search results for Mark Dawson's books.

Regardless of whether it's fiction, self-help, or poetry, once published, your book can earn royalties every time it's sold.

Plus, once you are skilled and get a handful of experience in specific writing types, you can create a course and sell it on Udemy or Skillshare just like Clare Lynch is doing.

She is an expert blog writer and now earns millions annually selling courses on Udemy.

To start making money from writing, create a portfolio with writing samples and master different styles.

Clients value originality, research, and meeting deadlines. Writing pays well when treated as a business, and with consistency, it can grow into a full-time career.

Graphic Design

Graphic design offers several ways to generate income. A solid option is a freelance design since freelance graphic designers have the potential to earn between $18 and $66 per hour.

For this, you can join freelancing platforms– Fiverr and Upwork where clients seek graphic designers for logos, brochures, or branding.

Or you can outreach clients via LinkedIn, Instagram, and email.

Lauren Hom, a designer known for her lettering work, uses Instagram to showcase her designs and secure high-profile freelance clients.

Another way is to sell digital templates.

Businesses and individuals often need ready-made designs they can customize.

Designing templates for social media posts, business cards, or PowerPoint slides and selling them on sites Envato Elements, Gummroad or Creative Market provides a steady source of income.

Envato's design interface.

After creating the designs, you only need to update them occasionally.

Also, sell stock graphics on Adobe Stock and Shutterstock. Upload your designs—like icons, illustrations, or photos.

For instance, Shutterstock contributor Sergey Nivens earned a substantial income by uploading images and videos that regularly sell.

Shutterstock's top images result for Sergey Nivens.

Each time someone downloads your design, you earn a commission. Once your work is uploaded, it can generate ongoing income with minimal effort.

Print-on-demand is also a great option for you as a graphic designer. Platforms such as Printify and Gelato let you upload designs for products like t-shirts, mugs, or tote bags.

When someone buys an item, the platform handles production and shipping and you receive a portion of the sale.

If you're comfortable teaching, create design courses on Skillshare or Udemy.

Sharing knowledge of software or specific techniques allows you to earn money every time someone signs up.

On top of that, you can help businesses create functional and aesthetically pleasing websites or apps if you are passionate and have experience in UI/UX designing.

Selling Handmade Crafts

It's no surprise that selling handmade crafts is also a lucrative hobby that could be your money-making machine.

Selling handmade crafts can be a profitable hobby with a massive market. It's valued at 1.2 trillion in 2025 and is expected to reach 2.4 trillion by 2032.

You can sell your creations on different marketplaces like eBay, Amazon Handmade, or Goimagine (a dedicated space for selling handmade crafts).

Sarah Turner, a jewelry designer, made a successful business by selling her handmade pieces on Etsy, eventually turning her hobby into a full-time job.

Sarah Turner's product page.

If you prefer selling locally, craft fairs and pop-up markets are great opportunities to meet customers face-to-face. You can sell your products, get feedback, and make connections with other crafters and potential buyers.

Many artisans like Amy Howard, who sells handmade furniture, make a substantial income by combining online and in-person sales.

Also, consider making DIY kits or craft supplies. For example, you can sell jewelry-making kits, pottery sets, or painting supplies with instructions.

Plus, it’s a good idea to publish videos on Instagram, and TikTok related to your crafting process. This way, you can earn money through ads, donations, or sponsorships.

You can also set up a Patreon account where fans can pay for exclusive content such as special crafting tutorials.

Music Production

If you’re into making music, you can monetize your skills in many ways.

Start with selling beats on BeatStars, AudioJungle or Airbit, where producers can license their tracks to artists, content creators, or anyone needing music.

Nick Mira made a career selling beats to independent artists, providing a solid example of how licensing can generate consistent income.

Mixing and mastering for other artists is another way to earn. Many musicians need professionals to refine their tracks before releasing them.

Offer your services on freelance sites like Upwork or Fiverr. Both of them have a special category of Music and Sound where you can get clients who need professional sound production.

Fiverr's Music & Audio section showcases.

You can also sell sample packs. If you're good at making unique sounds or loops, package them up and sell them on sites like Splice or Loopmasters.

Likewise, streaming royalties can be a substantial revenue stream for music producers. Spotify, Apple Music, and Tidal pay artists and producers based on the number of streams their songs receive.

To earn streaming royalties, you'll need to distribute your music through services such as DistroKid, TuneCore, or CD Baby.

These platforms help get your music onto major streaming services and collect royalties on your behalf.

Plus it's always great to create content on Instagram and TikTok regarding your skills so people can understand who you're and what you're selling.

For example, Finneas, the producer and brother of Billie Eilish, used his social media presence to showcase his production process, behind-the-scenes content, and snippets of his music.

Over time, this attracted attention from both fans and industry professionals.

Finneas' collage of music-related content.

Also, for passive income, consider starting a Patreon or YouTube channel to upload tutorials, exclusive content, and music production tips. Monetize through ads, donations, and subscriptions.

However, before stating, make sure to understand the licensing laws to protect your work.

Marketing yourself and networking with other creators will help you grow your brand and maintain a steady stream of income.

Gaming (Streaming and Content Creation)

Did you know that the global gaming industry generated more than $365 billion in 2023 and is expected to reach $500+ billion by 2028

That means there are abundant opportunities for passive income through gaming.

Twitch, YouTube, and Facebook Gaming offer opportunities to make money through ads, sponsorships, and donations for streaming gaming videos.

For instance, Ninja, one of the top streamers on Twitch, earned millions of dollars through a combination of subscriber revenue, donations, and brand sponsorships.

Ninja's Twitch profile.

As you build your audience, brand deals and sponsorships will also come into play.

YouTube lets you monetize videos with ads, plus you can earn from super chats during live streams. Jacksepticeye, a popular gaming YouTuber, is a good example you can check.

YouTube's search result for gaming videos.

Twitch offers a similar system with channel subscriptions and bits (virtual gifts from viewers).

Create a membership or Patreon page. Offer exclusive content to your most dedicated followers. Create private streams for a monthly subscription fee.

You can also sell merchandise as you grow your fan base. Design and sell your branded merchandise like T-shirts, mugs, and posters.

For this, Teespring or Printful can handle the production and shipping, leaving you free to focus on content. Pokimane, one of the top game live streamers, has her merch store that offers clothing, posters, and accessories

Pokimane's product page.

Also, If you play competitive games, you have the opportunity to host tournaments or events. You can charge entry fees and offer a portion of the prize pool, or attract sponsors to cover costs.

But bear in mind that building a substantial following through gaming content takes time. Don’t expect immediate returns.

Income can be inconsistent at first, and the competition is fierce. But by continuously improving your content using AI productivity tools, you'll increase your chances of turning gaming into a long-term business.

Digital Art and NFT Creation

In 2024, the NFT market saw transactions worth over $8 billion and digital art plays a major role.

With blockchain technology supporting art sales through NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens), creators now have the potential to earn significant income from their digital artworks.

Using OpenSea, Rarible, and Foundation artists can mint their artwork into NFTs which can then be sold.

Rarible's NFT page.

But for this, you need to familiarize yourself with cryptocurrency and blockchain technology, as the process involves setting up a digital wallet, converting your artwork into a token, and listing it for sale.

To scale, build a brand. Market your digital art through Instagram, Twitter, or specialized NFT communities like Discord.

Engage with your audience and establish your reputation as a digital artist. This will help you attract collectors who will pay premium prices for your work.

Another profitable option is offering your art for licensing. Companies pay for high-quality digital art to be used in advertising, products, or media.

You can sign up on ArtStation or Shutterstock to make your digital pieces available for licensing.

A variety of digital art reference.

Also, if you have a unique art style or technique, teach others how to create digital art. Skillshare, Udemy, or Patreon provide an avenue for you to generate revenue from your knowledge and skills.

Build a following, offer premium courses, and create exclusive content for your supporters.

Plus, you can sell prints of your digital art on print-on-demand services such as Redbubble or Teespring.

Upload your designs and when someone buys a print, the platform handles the production and delivery. This is a simple way to monetize your digital art without dealing with logistics.

Teaching or Tutoring Online

The online tutoring industry is booming. According to a report by Global Market Insights, the e-learning market is expected to reach $1 trillion by 2032.

This means there is a massive opportunity for anyone with teaching skills to capitalize on.

Offer your expertise in a specific subject—math, languages, or test preps. VIPKid and Wyzant let you list your services and attract students.

You can set your own rates, which may range from $20 to $80 per hour, depending on your expertise and subject. To stand out, create free content on YouTube or Instagram to build your reputation.

Using AI tools for teachers can help make valuable educational resources easier without the need for extensive time or effort.

Post short lessons, tips, or tricks that showcase your teaching style and attract an audience. Once you have a solid following, you can direct people to your tutoring services or premium courses.

However, be mindful of the administrative side. Keeping track of student payments, scheduling, and lesson planning can take time.

You’ll need to stay organized and be proactive in responding to student inquiries to keep the business running without difficulty.

Baking and Cooking

Baking and cooking are some of the most profitable hobbies, particularly when you consider that the food industry generates trillions each year.

Revenue growth in food categories from 2018 to 2029.

The rise in food delivery services and specialized diets has created a massive demand for home-cooked meals and personalized baking.

People are willing to pay for fresh, homemade products that fit their preferences.

One way to make money is by baking custom cakes service for weddings, birthdays, or corporate events could be a lucrative venture.

Consider Rachel, who began baking custom cakes and cupcakes. She used Instagram to showcase her designs and quickly grew her following.

A collage of wedding photos.

You can also sell meals on delivery apps like Uber Eats, DoorDash, or GrubHub. Plus give online cooking or baking classes either through live sessions or pre-recorded courses.

For example, Grant Batty, a home baker, uses Skillshare to sell baking tutorials.

Brant Batty's Skillshare profile.

If you enjoy creating unique recipes, start a food blog or YouTube channel. You can feature quick meal ideas and recipe tutorials and get monetized on YouTube after growing a subscriber base.

Besides, you can also sell recipes or cookbooks. If you have a unique cooking style, write and self-publish an e-book with your best recipes.

Diana did this, and her cookbook now sells for $12.99 on platforms like Amazon, generating passive income. If you enjoy cooking and want to take it on the road, a food truck or pop-up event can be a great option.

As a food industry business owner, make sure you understand food safety regulations, keep a close eye on your finances, and deliver consistent quality to build customer trust.

Quality ingredients and excellent customer service can help your business thrive.

Fitness and Personal Training

The fitness industry is expected to reach a revenue of 434.74 billion by 2028. Personal trainers are part of this boom, and there’s no shortage of ways to turn your fitness hobby into a money-making venture.

Joe Wicks (The Body Coach) used a similar model and grew his virtual personal training business during the pandemic.

You can also sell fitness programs. Create customized workout plans and sell them on your website or Gumroad or Teachable.

Through this, customers can purchase and follow your plan without you needing to be present.

Jeff Nippard, a fitness YouTuber, has a thriving business selling detailed workout and nutrition plans for bodybuilders and fitness enthusiasts.

Also, build your presence on Instagram, YouTube, or TikTok by posting workout tutorials, fitness challenges, or nutrition tips.

Kayla Itsines, creator of the Bikini Body Guide, gained fame on Instagram by posting short workout videos and challenges.

With your following growing, you can attract sponsorships from fitness brands or run affiliate marketing programs where you earn commissions on products you recommend.

Fitness coaching can extend beyond physical training. Offer nutrition coaching, mindfulness sessions, or lifestyle coaching, all of which can be packaged into premium services.

For recurring revenue, create a subscription service on platforms like Patreon, where subscribers get exclusive content and access to live Q&A sessions.

How to Choose the Right Hobby for You?

Choosing the right hobby is a decision that can impact your personal fulfillment, skill development, and potentially your financial future.

Instead of just picking something "fun," decide on hobbies that bring value and growth to your life. Here’s how to zero in on the one that’s best for you:

Start with Passion/Interest

Find a hobby that excites you every time you think about it. If you enjoy experimenting with new recipes or spending time in the kitchen, then cooking might be a natural fit.

If building something with your hands gives you satisfaction, woodworking or crafting might be the right path.

The goal is to identify what keeps your attention, even when you're tired or distracted. When you’re genuinely interested, the effort will feel less like work.

Assess Your Available Time

Before jumping in, realistically assess how much time you can commit. Some hobbies, like learning to play a musical instrument or mastering a language, require consistent practice over time.

Others, like photography, can be done on your schedule. Choose a hobby that works well in your current routine, so you’re not overwhelmed before you start.

Evaluate the Skill Level and Learning Curve

Be honest with yourself about where you stand.

If you're already knowledgeable in a field, you may find starting an advanced hobby (like coding or wine tasting) easier than someone just beginning.

On the flip side, pick a hobby that challenges you enough to grow but isn’t so difficult that you get discouraged early on. It’s important to strike the right balance between effort and reward.

Consider the Financial Commitment

Many hobbies can require a significant investment.

If you're interested in photography, you might need a good camera; for gaming, the latest console, and for fitness, proper equipment, or a gym membership.

Since it’s not always necessary to splurge upfront, think about whether you can afford the initial and ongoing costs of pursuing your hobby.

Think About Long-Term Growth

Does the hobby allow for long-term growth? Hobbies that build on your knowledge or skills over time tend to be the most rewarding.

For instance, practicing photography can sharpen your skills, and over time, you might build the expertise to teach others.

Likewise, writing might start as a personal endeavor but could develop into publishing your books.

Final Thoughts

Finding a hobby that suits you is one thing but converting it into something sustainable can be exhausting—mainly in terms of content creation. The hours spent producing content, planning, and managing everything can lead to burnout.

That's where Zebracat helps. It simplifies the entire process of video content creation. Using it you can create AI-generated videos in minutes instead of hours.

And will get professional content complete with visuals, avatars, AI human-sounding voiceovers, transitions, effects, and music.

So If you're finding yourself stuck in a loop of long hours and creative fatigue, it's time to think about a smarter way to work.
