You sign up for an affiliate program, get a unique link, and include it in your video descriptions. When viewers click on your link and make a purchase, you earn a percentage of the sale.

I understand, most of the guides we read on YT affiliate marketing are just giving surface-level info: “Pick a niche,” “Post videos,” and “Get rich.”

But not this one.

Let me save you months of frustration by giving you the truth about how YouTube affiliate marketing actually works. No BS.

Step #1- Choose a Profitable Niche 

Most people screw this up. They pick random niches because they see others doing well in them. Wrong move.

The goal isn’t to copy; it’s to find something micro-niche-specific that fits you—your skills, interests, and the audience you can actually speak to.

Ask Yourself These Brutal Questions:

  1. Can I talk about this niche for years without getting bored? If the answer’s no, move on.
  2. Do people in this niche spend money? You need buyers, not window shoppers.
  3. What’s my angle? If you’re jumping into fitness, are you focusing on home workouts, bodyweight exercises, or gym hacks for beginners? Narrow it down.

How to Validate a Niche?

Go to Google Trends and look up your niche. If interest is flat or declining (below 50%) over the past 12 months, forget it. 

For example, when I searched the 12-month trend for “space-saving furniture” it was above 50%.

But for the “space saving furniture” micro-niche — “under bed storage furniture” it’s an extreme zigzag pattern. So I’ll not pick this niche.

Next, go to YouTube and search your niche keywords. Check the top 5 channels.

What’s their subscriber count? Are they posting consistently? If they have a larger number of subscribers, are posting regularly, and are getting handsome views, it's a green flag for you.

Another way you can validate your idea is by finding products in your niche on Amazon. If they’re selling well — meaning they have 50 reviews minimum, you’re good to go.

Never Make These Mistakes

  • Picking niches they don’t care about because someone said it’s “profitable.”
  • Choosing overly broad niches like “travel.” What kind of travel? Luxury? Backpacking? Local road trips? Get specific.
  • Diving into niches you don’t know much about. You’ll struggle to create content and build authority.
  • Assuming a niche is profitable without checking Google Trends, Amazon Best Sellers, or YouTube search.

Step #2 - Build a YouTube Channel That Looks Legit

This is where most beginners sabotage themselves. Your channel is your storefront. If it looks shady or lazy, people will click away in seconds.

So how can you set up your channel? Follow these rules. 👇

  1. Name your channel with clarity. Never use clever puns or generic names. If your niche is about hiking gear, go with “Hiker’s Gear Lab” or “Trail Tech Reviews.” People should know exactly what they’re getting.
  2. For banner, logo, and thumbnail designs, use Canva or hire someone on Fiverr for $10-$20. Add a tagline in your banner that should tell people what they’ll get. Example: “The Best Hiking Gear Without Breaking the Bank.”

  1. In the About section speak directly to your audience. Example:

Step #3- Research Affiliate Programs

Not all affiliate programs are worth your time. You can grind out videos for hours, drive tons of clicks, and still end up with pennies if you’re not strategic.

To choose the affiliate program, you need to decide if you will work with physical products, digital ones, or both.

For physical products, Amazon Accoosiate is good for beginners because their products are tangible and easy to demonstrate. However, their affiliate commissions are low (1%-10%).

However,  you can join brand affiliate programs too. For this GetLasso and Levanta are great websites. They give you the list of affiliate programs in your niches with their commissions and cookie duration.

Alternatively, you can search “Best affiliate programs in [your niche]” on Google and find endless options to explore.

Digital products are where the real money is. Why? Margins are huge. Unlike physical goods, there’s no manufacturing or shipping cost, so companies can afford to pay you 20%-50% commissions.

However, I would recommend focusing on programs with free trials or entry-level tiers like the Zebracat affiliate program. People are more likely to try something free, and once they’re hooked, you earn when they upgrade.

Under digital products, recurring commissions are the real pot of gold. Because subscriptions like web hosting, VPNs, or email marketing tools pay you every single month for as long as the user stays subscribed.

But how you can film like a pro (even if you’re broke)?

  • Use your phone, but get a decent mic. Bad audio = instant clicks away.
  • Light your face. Use natural light or get a $30 ring light on Amazon.
  • Show the product in action. If you’re reviewing headphones, show how they look on you and how they connect to devices.

Now the question is:

CTR = (Number of Clicks/ Total Impressions)×100

For example, if your video had 100,000 impressions and 5,000 clicks, your CTR would be 5%.

Typical CTR ranges from 2-10%. But below 2% is considered low.

Second thing, write attention-grabbing titles. 

  • Stick to under 50 - 100 characters so people see the full title at a glance.
  • Don’t make people guess—say what the video is about in plain words.
  • Be super specific. For example instead of a generic title: "Get Fit at Home" write specific, "15-Minute HIIT Workout for Busy Moms (No Equipment)"
  • Write as you talk. No big words or complicated phrases.
  • Generate curiosity, but don’t lie or mislead.
  • Use words your audience is already searching for. Be specific to their interests
  • Add 1-2 keywords in your title.
